Benefits of a Community Garden

The SJU Community Garden (55th & Greenwood) fosters urban agriculture which is beneficial to the environment, and to the health and wellbeing of community members. Our community garden strives to reduce the impact of food deserts and allow community members greater access to nutritious food that is optimal to live a healthy life.

  • Beautifies the landscape
  • Makes Fresh Vegetables & Produce Accessible
  • Promotes Healthier Lifestyles
  • Supports Greenspace for necessary Pollinators
  • Builds Stronger Communities
  • Opportunities for Learning
  • Relieves Stress and Improves Wellness

Social ties are another important benefit to the well being of people in a community since they can bring positive health effects and community involvement. Community gardens allow for the creation of social ties and build a greater feeling of community. These connections help reduce crime, empower residents, and allow people to feel safe in their neighborhoods.

THE GOALS OF OUR ORGANIC GARDEN:

  • A source of organic food for the community and PNA (Phinney Neighborhood Association) hot meals program.
  • A peaceful place for reflection
  • Serve as a visible product of land stewardship and a healthier urban environment
  • Serve as a community learning place for sustainable urban agriculture and garden practices
  • Support pollinator habitat and corridors
  • Preserve community open space.

Where: SJU Community Garden, along Greenwood Avenue and adjacent to the parking lot.

When: Community Work parties are most second Saturdays, depending on the season.  All are welcome to join.
